History: Not much is known about Lt.Cmdr. Randall's past. It is known that he was born to busy parents on Earth, and that he never even left the planet until his third week at the Academy. While at the Academy, he continually scored remarkeably high in all areas of engineering, especially warp theory. He also took several classes in advanced weapons research and design, with more than adequate results. His marriage to fellow cadet Karen Daniels is now common knowledge. Upon graduation they were assigned to the U.S.S. Steamrunner, he as a member of the engineering staff, and she as assistant ship's counsellor. Their split occurred about a year later, when she was offered a post on the Yagasaki as Ship's Counsellor. Randall selfishly opposed the transfer, and she left him to further her career. Within a month, the Yagasaki had been destroyed, and her crew captured. Randall was devastated, and requested a transfer to a non-ship based assignment. He was re-assigned to the Daystrom Institute on Galor IV, and worked closely with Admiral Haftel, to develop the advanced Quantum Torpedo, mark VIII. After serving for 2 years at Galor IV, with emphasis on weapons and propulsion, he once again felt the yearning to return to space. He requested (and received) a transfer to the U.S.S. Avalon as Assistant Engineering Officer. While serving on board the Avalon, he was re-united with his former wife, Karen Daniels. Their reunion was to be short lived, however, as she was revealed to be a traitor working with Dal Tralexa to destabilize the Bajoran-Federation alliance. She was killed while attempting to do so.
Randall has never been extremely good with people, preferring to work on engines and weapons instead. But already on board the Avalon, he has managed to make some friends, such as Lt.Cmdr Will Hunter, and his superior, Lt.Cmdr K'lara McNamara. His continued ability to socialize with the crew should improve his inherent worth as an officer. Due to Lt.Cmdr Hunter's preference of being called Will, and his longer tenure on board the Avalon, Lt.Cmdr Randall has since elected to be called by his middle name, Sam, to avoid confusion.
